Mystic Mountain is open and trading, under new ownership, and markets itself as the all new Mystic Mountain. That correction matters because the park went bankrupt and shut in late 2023, and a lot of travel pages still say it is closed. It is not. A chairlift takes you 700 feet up the hillside above Ocho Rios and a gravity bobsled brings you back down.
History
The park
Mystic Mountain opened in July 2008 on the hillside just west of Ocho Rios, near Dunn's River Falls, built and run by Rainforest Adventures, an operator with similar aerial tram parks in St Lucia, Costa Rica and elsewhere in the region. The design is unusual for Jamaica: rather than clearing the slope, the park hangs a chairlift over it, so you arrive at the top of the attraction by air and come down through the trees.
Why there is a bobsled in a rainforest
The ride is not a gimmick attached to a film. Jamaica genuinely entered bobsleigh at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics with a squad including Devon Harris, Dudley Stokes, Michael White, Freddy Powell and Chris Stokes, coached by the American bobsledder Howard Siler. Stokes and White finished 30th of 41 in the two man. In the four man, on the third of four runs, the sled went over and they did not finish.
Disney made Cool Runnings in 1993, loosely based on that four man run, and took considerable liberties with it. What the film left out is the better story. Jamaica kept going. At Lillehammer in 1994 the four man crew finished 14th, ahead of the United States, Russia, Australia and France. The crash is the famous part. Beating the Americans six years later is the part almost nobody knows.
The collapse and the sale
The pandemic closed the cruise trade and the park did not survive it. Mystic Mountain Limited defaulted on a J$1.1 billion bond and went into bankruptcy under receiver Wilfred Baghaloo. On 18 August 2023 Justice David Batts approved the sale of the business and its leases for US$13 million to Northjam, a Jamaica registered vehicle whose parent, Northjam Holdings Limited, is registered offshore.
The handover was not clean. In December 2023 the operation was shuttered outright, staff were made redundant and the phone lines were de-registered, which is where the "Mystic Mountain is closed" pages on the internet come from. The park reopened to the Jamaican public on 1 March 2024, rehiring more than 100 people, with Northjam director Wayne Cummings fronting the relaunch. The refurbishment covered ticketing and point of sale systems, a full kitchen and restaurant rebuild, and the conversion of the old museum space into a pizza and ice cream parlour with a bar and coffee shop.
What it costs and when it opens
Hours move, and the park does not run seven days every week, so call ahead on (876) 676-1777. The Mystic Adventure Pass, covering the Sky Explorer chairlift, the infinity pool and waterslide, the Reggae Rock climbing wall, Anansi's Web rope course, the hummingbird garden, lookout tower and nature trail, is quoted around US$70 per adult, or roughly US$88 with hotel pickup. Packages adding the bobsled, the Raggamuffin coaster and the zipline have been quoted from about US$69 up to about US$169, so get the current sheet rather than trusting a figure online.
Jamaican residents get a much better deal, published in Jamaican dollars. The three hour Brawta Reloaded runs around J$7,000 for adults aged 10 and over and J$5,000 for children aged 7 to 9. The four hour Run Di Riddim Reloaded is around J$9,500 and J$6,000, with a zipline add on about J$2,500. Local ID is required.
What it is actually like
The Sky Explorer is the quiet part and, for a lot of people, the best part. It takes roughly 15 minutes each way, climbing about 700 feet over the canopy with Ocho Rios and the sea opening up behind you.
The bobsled is a 3,280 foot metal track, gravity driven, with a hand brake in the sled so you set your own speed. It is genuinely quick if you leave the brake alone and completely gentle if you do not. The Raggamuffin coaster is the faster sibling, 14 tight turns suspended over the hillside. There is also a canopy zipline, electric ATVs on the trails, and an infinity edge pool with a tube slide at the top, which is where families end up for the last hour.
On heavy cruise days the ride queues build from mid morning, and chairlift capacity is the bottleneck, so arriving at opening is worth more here than at most attractions.

How it fits a day
YaadBinge runs Mystic Mountain as a morning, roughly 9am to 1pm, then drops down the hill for lunch and a beach afternoon. Four hours covers the chairlift both ways, two or three rides and the pool without rushing.
It sits a few minutes from Dunn's River Falls, so the two pair naturally, but do not stack them in one morning. Falls at 8.30am then Mystic from about 11am works. Both in three hours does not.
