Beaches Ocho Rios closed to guests on 31 May 2025 and has not reopened. It is not taking bookings, and any site still selling rooms there is selling something that does not exist. This page explains what the resort was, why it shut, who owns the land, and what to do instead, because most of the internet has not caught up.
History
The site was Boscobel Beach, and it was a landmark
The resort stands at Boscobel in St Mary, east of Ocho Rios along the coast road, next to the small airstrip. For most of its life it was not a Sandals property at all. It was Boscobel Beach, run by the SuperClubs group, and it was one of the properties that established the Jamaican all-inclusive as a format that took children seriously rather than treating them as a problem. It then sat closed for more than two years.
Trade press repeatedly reports that a hotel opened on this stretch of Boscobel Beach in 1959 and later operated as a Playboy Club. A Playboy Club-Hotel did exist at Ocho Rios in the mid 1960s, with surviving brochures dated 1965 and 1967, but we cannot establish from primary sources that it stood on this exact site, so treat the Playboy story as unconfirmed rather than fact. It is repeated constantly and sourced almost never.
2002: Guardian bought it, Sandals ran it
This is the part that explains the closure. The property was bought not by Sandals but by Guardian Resorts Jamaica Limited, a subsidiary of Guardian Holdings, which refurbished and expanded it at a cost of around US$18 million and reopened it as Beaches Boscobel on 30 June 2002: 224 rooms on 22 landscaped acres. Gordon "Butch" Stewart's Sandals group took it on under a ten year management contract with an option to renew, bringing the Sandals umbrella to twenty resorts and the Beaches brand to seven.
It was later renamed Beaches Ocho Rios Resort and Golf Club and given a further renovation reported at around US$30 million in 2012. Over the years it ran the Pirates Island water park, a Sesame Street children's programme with character breakfasts, golf, tennis, pools and a spa, and it built a loyal repeat clientele of families.
Why it closed
Beaches Ocho Rios was the only resort in the Beaches portfolio that Sandals did not own. It managed someone else's hotel. In April 2025 Sandals announced the closure, effective 31 May, saying the third party owner intended to carry out a major renovation and that there was, in the words of executive vice president Gary Sadler, the possibility of a continued relationship afterwards. Guardian Resorts Jamaica is reported as overseeing that renovation.
The staff outcome was better than these things usually are. Reporting at the time put the workforce at around 400 and said more than 300 were reassigned to other Sandals and Beaches properties in Jamaica and at Beaches Turks and Caicos.
The closure left the Beaches brand with two resorts, Beaches Negril in Jamaica and Beaches Turks and Caicos, while the wider group pursued expansion elsewhere, including new Beaches properties announced for Barbados, Exuma and Runaway Bay.
Where it stands now
We can find no published announcement of a reopening date, a new brand or a new operator for the Boscobel property. Anyone stating confidently that it reopens on a particular date under a particular name is guessing. If that changes we will update this page.
What it costs and when it opens
It does not open. There is no admission, no day pass and no room rate, because there is no operating hotel.
Two practical warnings follow from that. First, booking sites and aggregator pages still list Beaches Ocho Rios with prices and availability. Those listings are stale. Second, if a driver or tour seller offers to take you to a beach day at Beaches Ocho Rios, they are either misinformed or selling you something else. Beaches day passes in Jamaica now apply to Beaches Negril.
What it is actually like
Closed, fenced and under renovation, on a good piece of coast. There is nothing to visit and nothing to see from the road.
For the record, and for anyone comparing what they remember with what is on offer now: the resort's strengths were the water park, the children's programme, the golf, and a quieter St Mary location well away from the cruise pier. Its weakness in later years, visible plainly in guest reviews, was that the buildings were tired and the fabric had not kept pace with the newer properties around Ocho Rios. That is precisely what the renovation is meant to address.
How it fits a day
It does not, and we will not pretend otherwise. YaadBinge does not book anything at this property and will not until an operator, an opening date and a rate sheet exist.
What the location is still good for is orientation. Boscobel sits on the quieter St Mary side, roughly 20 to 25 minutes east of Ocho Rios, with the airstrip, Oracabessa, James Bond Beach and Goldeneye just beyond it. If your day is running east rather than west, that corner of the coast is the reason to go, and it is worth a morning in its own right.
